The sounds out of Thomas were not at all what you might expect and the connectors used between Thomas and the cars did not seem compatible with other Lionel train sets.
The transformer that comes along is of the low wattage variety, so if you expect to use it with other Lionel engines, keep in mind that only those with very low power requirements will work. Also, Thomas looks strange going around in a plastic-sounding engine with his eyes moving clickety-clack. It does come with Lionel’s cheapest transformer which does not even have an accessory output, so if you want to expand your set with lighted buildings, you will need to buy a new transformer.
One reviewer has a minor complaint about the Lionel North Pole Central Christmas train set though. The Christmas music coming from the musical box car is nearly intolerable. It plays at a volume that is nearly too much for the speaker resulting in little more than noise. Three small areas on the locomotive did not receive paint. This is likely a production issue and Lionel is producing lots of these. Perhaps cosmetic flaws are to be expected these days.
